The flip of a switch marked something of a start to the festive season when the City of Cape Town tested the colourful lights display in the CBD.
Last night, the Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, accompanied by other dignitaries and entertainers, previewed the display ahead of the annual Festive Lights Switch-On.

The theme, “Cape Town: City of Hope”, signals the revival of hope and promise and the welcoming of thousands of locals and visitors once again.
Earlier this month, the entertainment line-up for the return to the traditional format of the event was announced and includes Mi Casa, Emo Adams, Will Linley, Abavuki, Sasha-Lee and more.
Various displays of lights (rope lights, LED bulbs) will be displayed across 15 different areas. Additionally, there will also be 90 small Christmas tree installations in various neighbourhoods around Cape Town to create a festive atmosphere for residents in their neighbourhoods too.
For the first time, the Festive Lights Switch-On event in 2022 will be greened with renewable energy certificates from Darling Wind Farm, with whom the City has a partnership.
Additionally, the City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Management Department is currently working with several schools, to launch the “Waste to Art” programme as part of the overall festivities associated with the Festive Lights Switch-On event.
The art projects will represent the theme “Cape Town: City of Hope” and are aimed at bolstering the efforts of the “Let’s Act” Spring Clean Campaign.
“This year will be a truly special switch-on event as we’ll have tens of thousands of Capetonians and visitors watching as we flip on the switch, illuminating the streets of the City with these colourful lights,” said the mayor. “We are already feeling the energy of the year-end approaching and with the return to the original format, we can share the experience of welcoming the start of the festive season together.”
“It will be a meaningful moment to share with all and I hope you’ll come out and join us. The event promises to be one for the whole family.”
The Festive Lights Switch-On 2022 is free for all and takes place at the Grand Parade from 4pm on Sunday, 27 November.
