The seawater in Gordon’s Bay has turned murky due to the red tide. Stephen Jordaan captured pictures of the scene on Saturday morning:
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, red tide is a term used to refer to a harmful algal bloom.
Algal blooms occur when colonies of algae grow out of control. The harm comes in that the algae can produce toxic or harmful effects on people, fish, shellfish, marine mammals and birds.
Though rare, harmful algal blooms can cause debilitating human illnesses.
