The collaborative efforts of the Mossel Bay, Overstrand, and Swartland K-9 units, along with the Rural Safety Units (RSUs) in the Overstrand and Swartland regions, have yielded significant results in the ongoing battle against crime.
These units with various municipal law enforcement agencies and the South African Police Service (SAPS) have arrested 76 individuals for a number of crimes during 5 September and 19 September.
Out of these arrests, 43 were made in the Overstrand municipal area, 17 in the Mossel Bay region, and 16 in the Swartland region.

The Mossel Bay K-9 unit recovered 7 236 mandrax tablets during a search in Asla Park. The unit also conducted a drug awareness programme with learners from Denneprag Primary School, warning learners against the dangers of substance abuse.

The arrests by the units in KwaNonqaba, Sonskyn Valley, JCC Camp and Mountain View consisted of:
- 2 arrests made for business robberies
- 2 arrests made for the possession of an imitation firearm
- 7 arrests made for the possession of drugs
- 1 arrest made for the possession of a dangerous weapon
- 2 arrests made for dealing in liquor
- 3 arrests made for riotous behaviour

In addition to the 7 236 mandrax tablets, the unit confiscated:
- 16 kilogrammes of dagga
- 11 bankies of heroin
- Ammunition for an R5 and various items of stolen property
The Swartland arrests, which occurred in Riebeek-Kasteel, Chatsworth, Malmesbury, Darling and Moorreesburg included:
- 6 arrests made for dealing in drugs and liquor
- 6 arrests made for the possession of drugs and
- 1 arrest made for the possession of a dangerous weapon

Items confiscated during the arrests included:
- 336 mandrax tabets
- A bankie of dagga
- 5 small zipper bags containing tik
- A weapon
- 8 x 9mm live rounds of ammunition
- 72.6 kilogrammes of mixed copper

Among others, the Overstand arrests included:
- 1 arrest made for dealing drugs
- 10 arrests made for the possession of drugs
- 5 arrests made for the possession of a dangerous weapon
- 3 arrests made for the possession of West Coast Rock Lobster (WCRL) tails
- 4 arrests made for the possession of stolen property
- 3 arrests made for attempting to fish without a permit
- 1 arrest made for assault
- 12 arrests made on wanted suspects
This unit, which also discovered a cannabis laboratory with various paraphernalia, confiscated:
- 523 WCRL tails,
- 14 mandrax tablets
- 2 knives
Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety Reagen Allen said, ‘The over 7 300 mandrax tablets discovered in Mossel Bay and the Swartland cannot go unnoticed. It once again demonstrates how important our K-9 and Rural Safety units are in removing items that are drivers of various crimes from our communities. As the Western Cape Government, we want to ensure that our residents do not have to contend with criminals and their illicit operations.’
