On 8 of August, 19-year-old Ridawaan Strydom, stood before the Belville Magistrates’ Court accused of the fatal stabbing of a dog that barked at him.
As the shocking event unfolded, the devastated owner, William Davids, along with his neighbour, found themselves amid a nightmare, and rushed the injured animal to the closest veterinary facility.
A report was made to the Ravensmead South African Police Service (SAPS) and they in turn sought guidance from the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s Inspector Siviwe Noko.

This decision set the wheels in motion for an investigation that would hinge on the power of eyewitness testimony that saw the evidence mounting against Strydom, leaving him little room to manoeuvre.
A plea agreement with the State was his only option and the sentence handed down by the court is unprecedented in its sternness.
The 19-year-old was slapped with a hefty R5000 fine or 5 months behind bars, coupled with an additional 12-month imprisonment suspended for five years.
He was also denied ownership of a pet for a period of three years. This comes hot on the heels of the SPCA’s recent Court Victory where an accused was given a sentence of R2000 or 2 months imprisonment.
‘In the pursuit of justice for animals, eyewitness testimony stands as undeniable an irrefutable truth. Every courageous voice that speaks out against animal cruelty is a powerful instrument in our fight for justice and a world where animals are respected, protected, and treated with compassion,’ says Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse.
‘This landmark ruling sets a precedent and demonstrates that our courts are taking a real.
