Matroosberg Nature Reserve released a statement on Wednesday, 31 June 2023, informing the public that its ski hut had burned down over the weekend – ‘It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce, that during this past weekend our beloved Ski Hut, burned down.’

The statement read that the police are busy with an investigation into the cause of the fire and no efforts will be spared in the thorough investigation being conducted, ‘leaving no stone unturned’.
‘As in all cases, accidental or criminal all aspects will be taken into consideration, motive and benefit being the first.’
The incident has caused substantial losses not only for Matroosberg but also for other families involved.
The owners of the reserve remain resolute in their commitment to rebuild, determined to provide an enhanced experience for its valued guests once the aftermath subsides.
Matroosberg is a privately owned nature reserve located on the farm Erfdeel. During the winter months and after a good snowfall, the mountain range is often covered with snow and boasts its very own private ski slope. Many locals flock to Matroosberg during winter to experience snow.
