In a statement, the City of Cape Town confirmed that this was the result of a collapsed sewer line.
Speaking to TygerBurger, ward councillor in the area, Anthony Bernadie said that local business owners logged service requests.
‘I immediately alerted senior management at the roads department, water and sanitation department and senior traffic officers. City teams were on site within 30 minutes. Upon assessment it was found to be a collapsed sewer line. Repair work commenced immediately and is set to continue until full restoration is complete,’ Bernadie said.

CoCT said a contractor had been on site to do an assessment of the extent of the damaged sewer line, shortly after the report, before the actual remedial work can be done.
‘This is in the interest of safety as it will also afford the ease of operating the large mechanical equipment during the excavation process,’ the City says.
This comes shortly after an incident involving the collapse of a section of road in Lavender Hill.
A refuse truck was driving in the area when the road unexpectedly caved in on Monday.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management Alderman Grant Twigg, said there was no prior visible sign of damage on the road surface.
Jermaine Carelse, a spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Service, said the team had received a call at approximately 9am, of a truck stuck in a hole in Lavender Hill.
