Motorists are urged to take note of road closures scheduled for Monday, 2 October, due to a planned march by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Permission has been granted for an expected gathering of 1 000 participants at the open field on the corner of Heideveld Road and Volstruis Road in Bridgetown (Vangate Mall).
The march is set to commence at 9am, following a designated route from Heideveld Road to the Ndabeni pound, as shared by Pinelands CPF. Rolling road closures will be implemented, including the left lane along Jakes Gerwel northbound, Viking Way, Jan Smuts Way, Sunrise Circle, Berkley Road and Alexandra Road.
Berkley Road will be closed between Cannon Road and Sunrise Circle, while Alexandra Road will be closed between Oude Molen Road and Ndabeni Road. Motorists seeking access to the Vincent Palotti Hospital are advised to use Raapenberg Road. Alternative routes are recommended to minimise disruptions.
Meanwhile, Santaco’s Deputy Chairperson Nceba Enge confirmed that the taxi association won’t participate in the planned shutdown. MEC Reagen Allen assured readiness in a meeting with officials, warning against attempts to incite chaos. Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie clarified the march, not a shutdown, and confirmed no taxi involvement.
Mayco Member JP Smith noted the City’s awareness of the EFF march with conditions for a peaceful protest. A contingency plan is in place to handle potential escalations, utilising technologies like drones and CCTV. Minister Allen urged protestors to march peacefully, warning of legal action for violence or property damage.
The City says it’s prepared for the EFF march, with plans to ensure businesses can operate, and commuters can reach their workplaces without disruptions.
