National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has directed parliamentary staff to secure a temporary venue for Parliament’s physical sessions.
This directive aligns with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party’s advocacy for in-person meetings over hybrid or virtual formats.
Since the fire in January 2022, which severely damaged Parliament’s chambers, there has been an ongoing dilemma regarding suitable locations for parliamentary sittings.

As per the Cape Times, the Cape Town City Hall, although a temporary solution, requires advanced booking, posing logistical challenges.
EFF MP Hlengiwe Mkhaliphi raised concerns about the uncertainty this situation presents to MPs, especially regarding recess periods and the subsequent resumption of sessions.
Addressing these concerns, Mapisa-Nqakula has set a deadline until the end of the financial year, March 2024, to establish a consistent physical location for Parliament.

The Speaker emphasised the urgency of this matter, insisting on a venue ready by 1 April 2024. She acknowledged the financial implications of securing such a venue, assuring that a detailed report on the chosen location would be provided.
The interim solutions, including the use of Cape Town City Hall and the Cape of Good Hope building for significant events like the State of the Nation Address (Sona) and budget announcements, have not been ideal.
These arrangements often involved a mix of physical and virtual attendance, highlighting the need for a more stable and permanent solution.
