A new 34-bed physical rehabilitation hospital is set to open in Somerset West this month, bringing specialised recovery services closer to patients and families in the Helderberg region.
Intercare is preparing to open the newly built facility at Vergelegen Plein Shopping Centre in October, as the hospital will cater for patients recovering from illness, injuries and neurological conditions, with treatment aimed at improving mobility, restoring daily living skills and helping patients return home safely.
The development expands Intercare’s rehabilitation services in the Western Cape, building on the group’s experience at its Physical Rehabilitation Hospital at Intercare Tyger Valley, which marked 20 years of service in September 2026.
Inside the new rehabilitation hospital

The Somerset West facility will accommodate 34 inpatients, with single-private, two-bed and four-bed rooms, each equipped with a bathroom and shower.

Patients will have access to a multidisciplinary team that includes rehabilitation doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. Dietitians and psychologists will also be involved where required.
The hospital has been designed to support rehabilitation beyond traditional therapy sessions, as its facilities include a hydrotherapy pool for suitable patients under specialist supervision, as well as occupational therapy spaces where patients can practise everyday tasks.
A fully equipped kitchen will allow patients to work on practical skills such as cooking and food preparation, while assisted bathing facilities will support the recovery of personal care and hygiene skills.
The facility will also have a dedicated dining area to help patients re-establish everyday routines and a family meeting room for discussions about care, support needs and discharge planning.

The hospital’s approach centres on individual rehabilitation plans tailored to each patient’s needs, abilities and progress.
Depending on the condition being treated, therapy may focus on improving movement, communication, personal care and the ability to manage daily activities independently.
Family involvement will form part of the rehabilitation process, particularly when preparing patients to return home. The aim is to help families understand the support a patient may need after leaving hospital and plan for a safe transition.
The new hospital represents a further investment in specialised rehabilitation care for Somerset West and surrounding communities.
By combining inpatient care with physical, occupational and speech therapy, the facility is intended to support patients whose recovery requires structured treatment and assistance over time.
