Faster and cheaper internet may be on the horizon for South Africans as Google’s Equiano subsea internet cable has made its way to the shores of South Africa.
Completing the journey from Portugal along the West Coast of Africa, the internet cable has completed its journey and finds itself at Telkom’s facility in Melkbosstrand in early August.
The latest cable from Google is named after the Nigerian-born writer and abolitionist, Olaudah Equiano, and will provide 144Tbps and 12 fibre that promises faster internet speeds when it comes online at the end of the year, as per Business Insider.
“Our investment in Equiano continues our long-standing policy of making strategic investments in subsea cables,” WIOCC Group CEO Chris Wood in a statement.
Along with this, Equiano “will have a direct impact on connectivity throughout the Southern Africa region” when it finally comes online.
