In its latest update, the V&A Waterfront announced that its appeal to keep the planned fireworks display on its New Year’s Eve celebration lineup has been successful and will go ahead ‘unless a court says otherwise’.
This comes after the display had to be called off last week following the City of Cape Town’s decision to withdraw its noise exemption permit that it initially granted.

In a statement on social media platforms, the V&A Waterfront confirmed that the festivities will start with a lineup of performances followed by the fireworks display which will begin around midnight and ‘will only last for five minutes’.
The retail giant said it had ‘taken everyone into consideration, including residents, tenants and visitors to the Waterfront’ when making its decision.
‘We wanted to give you plenty of notice so you can make any necessary arrangements to minimise the noise and disruption for yourself, your family and your furry friends,’ the V&A added.

Head of public relations of the V&A Waterfront Donald Kau told TimesLIVE that a specialist had been contracted for the display.
Meanwhile, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA said last week that it had lodged an urgent application in the Western Cape High Court against the V&A Waterfront Holdings and seven other respondents to obtain an urgent interdict to prevent the planned fireworks display from taking place.
‘There has been a large public outcry from animal welfare organisations, animal rights groups, concerned residents and others regarding the planned fireworks display; however, this has fallen on deaf ears,’ said the SPCA in a statement.
In its application, the SPCA submitted opinions, position statements and reports compiled by 29 experts that highlight the potential injuries and harm that both domestic and wild animals may suffer as a result of the intended fireworks display.
