Eskom announced that loadshedding has “unfortunately” been escalated to stage 5 until further notice.
According to the power utility, the announcement comes as a result of unusually high demand and the breakdown of a generating unit each at Hendrina, Kendal and Kriel power stations.
Additionally, Koeberg Unit 1 has been taken offline this morning for a planned refueling and routine maintenance.
City of Cape Town customers can expect stage 4 loadshedding between 6am and 10pm, and stage 5 loadshedding between 10pm and 6am from 12 to 14 December.
The City says its energy infrastructure is well maintained and managed but under pressure due to the constant high degree of loadshedding.
Parts of Hout Bay and the Cape Town City Bowl, Tamboerskloof and surrounds have been experiencing prolonged outages and power faults resulting from damage caused by loadshedding.
According to the City, the frequency and length of continued loadshedding at higher stages impact work and restoration times. Electricity infrastructures take strain from this.
