The mother of Nicholas Ninow, who has been convicted of raping a seven-year-old girl, says that he is not a rapist. She maintains he just “made a mistake”.

Chantelle Ninow had her first public interview with SABC, where she broke her year-long silence. During the interview, she admitted to using alcohol and drugs with her children.

She has reportedly accepted partial responsibility for her son’s actions, which she attributes to the family’s dysfunctional home environment. Chantelle also claims she now regrets not helping her son overcome his drug abuse.

During her interview, she insisted that her son is not a rapist, but rather made a mistake induced by his drug intake.

“I am sorry to that little girl’s parents and that little girl. I really am sorry. If it was my child… I would be so angry. I know sorry doesn’t cut it… but there’s nothing else I can say… I am so sorry,” she said to the victim’s family.

Ninow was sentenced to life in prison for raping a child while at a Dros restaurant in Silverton, Pretoria. The incident took place in Septemeber 2018, and left South Africa shocked. During his trial, he blamed drugs and alcohol for his actions.

According to Ninow, he would never have done such a thing to anyone if he were sober-minded.

During his trial, the High Court heard that he had been exposed to drugs at the age of 13, allegedly by his mother.
