The boy, who is from Hout Bay, was reportedly visiting the beach with friends and family when a wave swept him off a rock on the shoreline and into the sea, IOL reports.
Carmen Long, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Hout Bay deputy station commander, says the organisation’s Albie Matthews and Spirit of Gabi rescue crafts were launched by deputy crew. In addition, the NSRI Bakoven duty crew was also activated and launched their Gemini Legend rescue craft.
Further measures to locate the boy include the activation of the Western Cape Government of Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Metro Control’s EMS and Skymed helicopter.
‘Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, WC Government Health EMS, City of Cape Town (CoCT) Law Enforcement, and the Police Dive Unit were placed on alert,’ says Long.
‘Along the barely accessible terrain, an extensive sea, air, and shoreline search revealed no signs of the missing child. Thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing child in this difficult time.’
