The City of Cape Town’s urban mobility directorate confirmed that there will be no increase in MyCiTi tariffs, despite the hefty increase in the diesel price on Wednesday last week.

The City’s MMC for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, explained that the tariffs would only increase if the wholesale price of diesel breached the R27.51 per litre threshold for two out of three months or two consecutive months.
An increase in fares would then become mandatory in the following month.
‘The council-approved budget for the financial year allows the City to adjust MyCiTi tariffs in order to mitigate the risk of significant fuel price fluctuations in the future, and to be more cost-reflective of the diesel price which has a huge impact on the cost to operate the MyCiTi bus service,’ added the directorate.

As it stands, the current wholesale diesel price stands at R22.58 per litre, nowhere near the threshold, so the MyCiTi tariffs remain the same for now.
‘Our budget is structured in such a way that allows for fares to be adjusted during the financial year only following significant and sustained fuel price changes beyond a set threshold,’ said Quintas.
‘This is a carefully considered approach that is designed to ensure a resilience to fluctuations in the wholesale diesel price, protecting residents from erratic price shocks,’ he added.
Meanwhile, Golden Arrow Bus Services has announced an increase of 2.7% in bus fares from Monday, 18 September, as a result of the recent fuel price hike.
The chairman of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) WC, Mandla Hermanus, confirmed that minibus taxi fares would remain unchanged for the time being.
