Julius Malema has found himself in the hot seat once again after AfriForum requested that the Economic Freedom Fighters apologise and pay damages for singing the anti-apartheid song Dubul’ ibhunu, translated as ‘Kill the Boer’.
When Malema was asked if he sang the struggle song at the Johannesburg High Court, he denied singing the songs in videos presented to the court by the lobby group. “No, I think you have the wrong man. Even in the videos, they have presented before my Lord, not a single video shows me singing ‘Kill the Boer’, ” he said.
The EFF leader explained that the song was taught to him during his earlier days as a freedom fighter, and was never meant to be taken literally.
“I was taught the song when I was young. I joined the struggle when I was nine years old. We understood through political education what the song meant. They made us understand it was important not to take the song in its literal meaning,” he said.
He also touched on South Africa’s languages, explaining to the court that the words “boer” and “umlungu” represent ownership, and are not only aimed at white people.
“We understood that songs referred to the system of oppression, so anything that represents the system was referred to as Amabhunu,” he maintained.
