National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Gordons Bay duty crew were conducting routine training and maintenance at its Station 9 rescue base when the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) was alerted to a drowning in progress in the surf line at Kogel Bay Resort.

City of Cape Town lifeguards, who were on duty at Dappat se Gat Beach, and the City of Cape Town water rescue network were activated alongside several emergency crews while three NSRI rescue craft were launched.
Upon arrival on the scene, NSRI rescue craft initiated a search in the surf line for a 41-year-old male who had been reported missing in the surf line.
The man, believed to be from Strandfontein, was found off-shore and recovered onto the rescue craft where CPR efforts commenced.
Fire and Rescue Services and City of Cape Town lifeguards joined and assisted with CPR efforts once the man was brought to shore.
Skymed EMS paramedics also joined in after a landing zone was prepared on the beach for an EMS/AMS Skymed helicopter.
NSRI reported that after all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted, the man was declared deceased by paramedics.
‘The body of the man has been taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services,’ said NSRI.
The emergency crews who responded to Kogel Baai resort are the WC Government Health EMS rescue squad and ambulance, GB Med Sec ambulance services, SAPS, City of Cape Town law enforcement, as well as Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services.
The EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter was dispatched by EMS Metro Control and Police Water Policing and Dive Services were placed on alert.
Kogel Bay Resort is currently closed and police have opened an inquest docket.
