Over the past week, traffic officials have handed out over R10 million in fines to motorists in the Western Cape. According to EWN, the offences ranged from reckless driving, vehicles that are unroadworthy and speeding, while twenty people were arrested for drunk driving.
Transport MEC Daylin Mitchell said on Tuesday, December 28, that 36 people have died on the province’s road over the past few days.
“I want to urge all users to never drink and drive. We will find you and if you are found guilty, you will have a criminal record. I want to thank every law-abiding road user who does not speed, who does not drink and drive, who buckles up and ensures that their passengers are also buckled up. You are by far the majority.”
The Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services recorded 279 speeding fines and a total of 5 873 fines between December 20 and 27, reports News24.
190 roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints and speed cameras were set up across the province and 34 685 vehicles were pulled over to be checked. 39 vehicles were impounded and 134 confiscated for not being roadworthy.
The Western Cape has also seen a rise in road accidents over the festive period with a total of 35 accidents recorded in the province and 55 fatalities. By Christmas eve, the road fatalities increased to 100.
