One person was injured when service delivery protests in Cape Town turned violent, and two Golden Arrow buses were stoned.

Bronwyn Dyke-Beyer, spokesperson for Golden Arrow Bus Services, says buses were disrupted and delayed due to the protest action early on Thursday morning. ‘All services which operate via JK Masemola and Mew Way were diverted via Swartklip Road to the R300.’

Members of the Public Order Police and other law enforcement agencies were deployed following incidents of tyre burning, says Lieutenant Malcom Pojie, police spokesperson. ‘No arrest(s) have been made [and] forces will continue to monitor and police the area until stability is reached and the area is normalised.’
The incident occurred after residents of the Taiwan informal settlement took to the streets to demand development and services in the area. ‘All services which operate via JK Masemola and Mew Way were diverted via Swartklip Road to the R300,’ says Ndithini Leon Tyhido, Khayelitsha Development Forum chair. ‘he area has remained undeveloped for more than 30 years.’
IOL reports that roads affected by the protest action have since been reopened. City of Cape Town traffic services spokesperson, Kevin Jacobs, says authorities were addressing the impact of the protests. Several road closures were implemented at the N2 inbound and Spine Road and the N2 outbound on the R300.
