More than 2 000 arrests were made during the past week in the Western Cape thanks to a high-density policing initiative.

Captain Nowonga Sukwana, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), says Operation Shanela comprises stop and searches, roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, high-visibility patrols, the tracing of wanted suspects and compliance inspections at liquor outlets, and second-hand goods dealers.

A total of 2 576 arrests were made for the following offences:
- 24 for illegal possession of firearms;
- Three for illegal possession of ammunition;
- 58 for possession of a dangerous weapon;
- 36 for dealing drugs;
- 144 for possession of drugs;
- 40 for murder;
- Two for car-jacking;
- 12 for aggravated robbery;
- 26 for burglaries, both business and residential;
- 12 for robbery, both business and residential;
- 22 for attempted murder;
- 58 for rape;
- 227 for assault (grievous bodily harm);
- 318 for assault (common);
- 1432 are wanted suspects;
- 21 for theft of or from a motor vehicle;
- Three for theft of a motor vehicle;
- 101 for malicious damage to property;
- 23 driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; and
- 14 are illegal immigrants.
In addition, SAPS members conducted several seizures, including:
- 796 rounds of ammunition from different calibres;
- 50 firearms;
- 72 598 litres of liquor;
- 64 dangerous weapons; and
- Drugs including 119 98 kg of dagga, five grams of cocaine, 231 118 grams of Tik, one gram of Heroin, 113 grams of Nyaope, 59 tablets (ecstasy), 35 grams of ecstasy powder, 266 Mandrax tablets, and 8 061 grams Mandrax powder.
All the arrested suspects will make their respective court appearances once they have been charged. In the meantime, the next leg of Operation Shanela is being planned.
