Early this morning, Disaster Management had called for the 5km Fun Run and Pet Walk to be cancelled due to safety risks. The start of the event was delayed by an hour due to high seas and large quantities of sea foam across Beach Road.
Following several disappointed comments on social media, the event posted a response: ‘We completely understand the frustration and are equally disappointed at the outcome. We were able to reroute the 10km due to unsafe conditions, but unfortunately, the 5km and Pet Walk had restrictions beyond our control. The safety of our participants remains our top priority. Thank you for your understanding.’
Despite the unfortunate situation, about 5 000 contestants reportedly braved the cold and kept in good spirits.

Graham Louw of the Green Point Neighbourhood Watch told Cape {town} Etc that the amount of foam from the sea along the route was deemed too dangerous for runners.
‘The half marathon (9 or 10km) started an hour late and they followed a different route, made safer for the runners by the people overseeing the race.’
‘I felt so sorry for the runners who waited for an hour in the freezing cold with their running gear. But spirits were high and great excitement all around. Even some of the dog walkers followed the runners at the back just to give their doggies an outing. What a wonderful spirit the people showed despite a tough situation.’
