An order of immediate evacuation has been issued by the Overstrand Municipality as a wildfire in Franskraal has begun raging out of control.

“This message is for your safety, you are to immediately evacuate your home,” the municipality said.

This is the same fire that broke out on New Year’s Eve and spread through various parts of the municipality, including Betty’s Bay, Rooi-Els and Koggelbaai, burning through the areas for more than a week.

Theo Layne, City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, announced this morning that the fire had been contained. Adverse wind conditions, however, caused the blaze to flare up uncontrollably once again.

The fire is again affecting the Betty’s Bay area, too, in particular the Sunny Seas area. It is reported that the blaze is spreading east in the direction of Mooituitsig.

The R44 Clarens Drive between Kleinmond and Gordon’s Bay has been closed.
