The Pinelands Community Improvement District (PLCID) is urging residents and motorists to exercise heightened caution around Mutual Station and its adjacent taxi rank following a spate of disturbing incidents linked to escalating tensions among taxi operators, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The rising violence within the taxi industry reached a tragic peak on Thursday, as two individuals were reported killed at the Maitland taxi rank and another in a similar incident at the Bonteheuwel taxi rank.
Shortly after these tragic fatalities, an attempt was made by taxi operators to block traffic at Mutual Station, an action swiftly thwarted by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
In the wake of such alarming developments, a significant police presence, including Law Enforcement, Metro Police, and Traffic Services, has been established to monitor and manage the escalating situation.
While the PLCID has conveyed the gravity of the situation, it has also noted that these reports are yet to be independently verified. ‘We will continue to monitor developments and share verified updates where necessary,’ stated the PLCID in a recent advisory aimed at keeping the community informed and safe.
In light of the unsettling events, residents and motorists are advised to:
- Exercise additional caution when travelling near Mutual Station.
- Consider taking alternative routes where feasible.
- Avoid unnecessary gatherings near the taxi rank.
- Follow the instructions of law enforcement officials.
The alarming escalation in taxi violence coincides with an earlier incident on the same day where a shooting at the Palm taxi rank on Main Road in Delft left two men dead and one injured. According to SAPS Lieutenant Colonel F.C Van Wyk, the shooting was reported around 05:10.
Crime scene experts have since combed the area for evidence, as investigators piece together the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
The injured individual has been transported to a local medical facility for treatment. While police have yet to disclose the identities of the deceased or any details regarding potential suspects, the Delft police have officially registered two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder as part of their ongoing investigation.
Initial reports indicate that the motive for the shooting is believed to be taxi-related, but further information remains scarce.
As tensions mount, communities are urged to remain vigilant and prioritise safety amid such instability in local transport dynamics.
