Police are searching for four suspects after members of the SAPS flying squad were able to foil a hijacking on Monday evening.

The incident occurred shortly after 10pm on Monday when members patrolling the N1 freeway noticed a Renault vehicle that was hijacked earlier in Parow.
‘The members called for backup and a high-speed chase ensued,’ explained SAPS spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk. ‘The vehicle was chased from Bellville and ended up in Freedom Farm informal settlement near Delft.’

According to Van Wyk, the suspects started shooting at the members who returned fire. ‘The suspects disembarked the vehicle and ran in between the shacks when one of them dropped his firearm. The four suspects managed to evade arrest and are being sought.’
‘A 9mm Baretta pistol with eight rounds and one cartridge stuck in the firearm were retrieved. During this incident no injuries or damages were reported.’
The hijacked vehicle was confiscated for further investigation.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated matter, members working on Operation Restore in Mfuleni arrested three suspects between the ages of 18 and 26, for possession of a presumed hijacked motor vehicle.
At 11:30pm on Saturday, the members were doing visible and crime prevention patrols in the Kleinvlei area when they saw that the occupants in a gold Toyota Corolla acting suspiciously in the vehicle.
‘The members stopped and searched the vehicle in Blue Downs Way, Kleinvlei, and on further inspection it was found that the vehicle was reported hijacked at Kleinvlei SAPS in June 2023.’
The suspects were due to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
