Social media apps such as Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, all popular platforms owned by parent company Facebook, were hit by a massive outage on Monday, October 4.
According to News24, the company is experiencing outages in many regions, which have affected both the Web and smartphone apps. The problem doesn’t seem to be affecting just South Africa as DownDector has reported massive outages in populated cities such as Paris and Washington, with problems being reported from around 15:45 GMT.
As of writing this article, the servers continue to remain down for Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram which are all inaccessible at this time. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when things will be back up and running with both Instagram and WhatsApp issuing a statement via their Twitter page thanking users for their patience while they work on the issues.
The reason for the outage is still unknown and users will have to make use of alternative messaging apps in the meantime.
We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible.
Thanks for your patience!
