The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has announced plans to deploy its own internal security detail to protect customers, as well as staff and infrastructure. Its employees had previously protested against its former security companies.

“Prasa has consistently, since June this year, communicated its intention to terminate the contracts after the former public protector, Thuli Madonsela, found in her ‘derailed’ report on Prasa that all Prasa security contracts were irregular,” Prasa spokesperson Nana Zenani said to IOL.

According to Zenani, the matter is also currently being investigated by the Special Investigation Unit to hold those involved accountable.

“Police were called to the scene over the past two days, culminating in the use of stun grenades by the police today to disperse the protesters and allow employees and visitors to leave the premises,” she added.
