With many families planning trips to various holiday destinations, the Minister emphasises the need for heightened vigilance to shield children from potential dangers.
‘Some of these children will be travelling to various holiday destinations, and South Africans are urged to ensure that their safety is not compromised,’ Pule stated in a formal communication.
‘To remain proactive and prevent abuse, including gender-based violence and human trafficking, parents must always exercise caution and alert their neighbours or family members when children are left alone at home,’
With students enjoying their break from schooling, Minister Pule highlighted that children should not be allowed to wander the streets without just cause, as they may be exposed to risks such as abduction, sexual assault, and exploitation.
‘It is critical that parents and caregivers ensure the safety of children by knowing their whereabouts at all times,’ she emphasised, cautioning that perpetrators often capitalise on the unmonitored freedom that holidays can sometimes afford children.
In her statement, the Minister reinforced that the Department of Social Development is dedicated to implementing Pillar 4 of the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (NSP-GBVF).
This pivotal framework aims to strengthen communities and bolster institutional responses while providing essential care, support, and healing to the survivors of gender-based violence and their families.
‘The fight against gender-based violence cannot be one-sided; it requires the commitment of all South Africans, including civil society organisations, faith-based groups, and indeed society as a whole,’ Pule remarked, adding that protecting children is a collective responsibility that extends beyond individual families.
The ongoing 365 Days Comprehensive Child Protection Campaign plays a vital role in this communal effort.
The Minister also encouraged families to equip children with the contact details of the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre (GBVCC). In situations where they may feel unsafe or suspect abuse, children should know where to turn for help.
The GBV Command Centre is available around the clock, providing immediate support through various channels.
