As the clinic’s animal ambulance roamed the community to aid distressed dogs, City of Cape Town workers flagged down the vehicle. They recounted finding the puppy gasping for air amid a debris-strewn area in dire need of cleaning.
The three-month-old pup received immediate attention at the clinic. Upon examination, veterinarians diagnosed her with severe mange and malnutrition.
Upon arrival, Sr Heidi May, the general manager, observed that the puppy appeared to have surrendered to its condition.
‘But once she started receiving love and care from our staff, she started showing a bit of spirit again. The puppy is receiving treatment to cure the mange, vitamin boosters and pain medication. She has also received a de-wormer, flea and tick treatment and all necessary vaccinations,’ May said.
Additionally, the puppy was given a soothing bath and provided with nourishing food. Currently, she is recuperating at the clinic under close monitoring.
According to Lynton Adams, the organisation’s operations manager, the puppy displays no signs of aggression; instead, she exhibits a gentle and affectionate nature.
‘It is very heartsore to see her in this condition, and yet she does not hate humans,’ Adams said.
‘The puppy, named Nala, has been recuperating in our hospital and is progressing admirably. Although she is still receiving medication, she has officially been enrolled in our stray program and is now available for adoption,’ Adams said.
