The incident occurred on Sunday night along the R300 near Brackenfell when Hanse allegedly lost control of his Ford Bantam bakkie, crashing into the barrier.
Emergency services arrived at the scene after 11pm and discovered the vehicle upright on the centre median. Sadly, five children between the ages of one and seven sustained fatal injuries and could not be saved. Several others, including children, were also injured with varying degrees of severity.
According to IOL, upon investigation, it was found that Hanse was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, leading to his arrest. He appeared in the Bluedowns Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesperson for the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila, confirmed the charges against Hanse and provided further details about the incident. Hanse, his wife and others were reportedly travelling from Ceres when the accident occurred.
Hanse was granted bail, set at R5 000, on the condition that he refrain from discussing the case with any witnesses. The court has postponed his case until 18 August 2023 to allow for additional investigation.
