South Africa is not the only country with energy generation problems says President Cyril Ramaphosa, who spoke to the media at an ANC event on Thursday afternoon.
“As I was addressing the crowds here, we are not the only country – even the mighty United States of America, their most affluent state of California, has gone through years of problems of energy generation.
“We have come up with a grand solution which is in the process of being implemented, that we now need to restructure Eskom to allow other power generators to also generate power like other countries have done. It is a weakness to have one company having an absolute monopoly,” Ramaphosa expressed.
The president also outlined potential plans moving forward:
“We have decided that we want multi generators into the transmission which will be owned by the government, but multi generators and a number of distributors. So the solution is there. We are going to solve this problem. On the way to solving it more permanently, we are going to have hiccups… and that is what we will have to live with.”
Ramaphosa also attributed Eskom’s challenges to illegal electrical connections and cable theft while addressing community members in Tsabella in Ekurhuleni, who were armed with placards stating, “no electricity, no vote”.
He went on say: “So, this thing of ‘no electricity, no vote’ needs to stop now. If you don’t vote for the ANC, then electricity may never be restored. Which other party do you trust to ensure that electricity is restored?”
