According to the department, the fire damaged two buildings and caused a large part of the roof to collapse.
While the two affected buildings sustained water damage and supplies including medical equipment, bedding, mattresses, clothing and toys were destroyed in the fire, there were no injuries sustained by residents or staff.
‘Due to the quick intervention of staff, all 110 residents – most who are bed or wheelchair bound – were evacuated to safety within minutes,’ said the DSD.
‘The two affected buildings are uninhabitable, however, the residents are being accommodated in other buildings on the Stikland premises,’ the department added.
The Western Cape head of DSD, Dr Robert Macdonald, commended the Sivuyile team for their calm and efficient action.
‘I extend my sincere thanks to the Sivuyile team who remained calm and moved the residents to safety, and very quickly set up temporary alternative accommodation to ensure the continuation of services,’ Macdonald said.
‘The Western Cape Departments of Infrastructure and Health and Wellness have extended their assistance, and DSD is working closely with these departments to plot the way forward.’
The cause of the fire remains unclear at this stage and is being investigated.
