In the early hours of Monday morning, NSRI Yzerfontein duty crew were called to the seascape due to reports of a 42-foot yacht run aground at Dassen Island.
According to the duty commander, Andre Livingstone-Louw, the sea rescue craft, Rescue 34 was launched. The yacht lay on a rock with evident damage.
On arrival, the team found one crewman injured, but three of the other yachtsmen were safely ashore.
“With storm weather approaching we established a towline and later during the morning, in the incoming tide, we gently towed the yacht off the rocks and towed the yacht onto the beach where there is less likelihood of serious damage,” Livingstone-Louw commented.
It was confirmed that structural damage to one side of the yacht had caused an ingress of water, which called for a temporary repair effort while anchor lines were established above the high water mark.
As for the crewman with the injury, he was brought to Yzerfontein aboard the sea rescue craft, sporting a stable and satisfactory condition.
