The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) Western Cape branch has issued a plea to its members, calling for a peaceful stay-away following recent incidents of violence and property damage that have affected the city.
Expressing regret over the loss of life and destruction, the organisation says they are committed to resolving disputes through lawful means and condemns any form of violence or disruption. The council seeks to address concerns about public perception and highlights its dedication to non-violence and adherence to the law.
The recent events have raised concerns and prompted reflection within the organisation. Santaco Western Cape is concerned about the perceived lawlessness, stating that this perception is fueled by external actors and not representative of its members.
The council emphasises its commitment to working collaboratively with the City of Cape Town to address grievances and find constructive resolutions that uphold the interests of both the industry and the public.
Addressing its members, Santaco Western Cape urges restraint and adherence to the recent interim interdict issued by the courts. The organisation affirms its respect for the authority of the courts and calls on its members to reflect this in their conduct.

By doing so, the council aims to promote a civil environment and ensure safe and efficient public transportation services for the community.
While acknowledging the frustration stemming from recent incidents involving law enforcement officers, Santaco Western Cape unequivocally denounces any resort to violence or destruction. The organisation firmly believes that peaceful dialogue and lawful channels are the means to achieve resolution.
It disassociates itself from any involvement in violent protests and encourages members to report incidents of violence, unlawful blockades and property damage. The council warns of potential disciplinary action against any member implicated in violent acts.
As the organisation navigates these challenges, its legal team is dedicated to expediting a constitutional challenge of the by-law, with a hearing scheduled for February 2024. Santaco Western Cape reaffirms its identity as a service-oriented industry, rejecting any association with activities contrary to law and order.
