Serious and violent crimes remain a top priority for police in the Western Cape as they make inroads in confiscating illegal firearms in the province. SAPS’ latest success comes after an integrated operation by members of the Provincial Integrated Task Team, POPS and the SANDF foot patrols were conducted at the Nyanga taxi rank on Thursday, July 22.
Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut says a 38-year-old suspect was apprehended and searched, which resulted in the discovery of an unlicensed 9mm pistol and ammunition. According to Traut, the suspect has been detained until his court appearance in Athlone on Monday, July 26.

Traut also confirmed that in an unrelated incident in Kraaifontein, officers attached to the Flying Squad patrolled the area when they spotted a suspected man fleeing on foot. He then managed to evade arrest, but he is now disarmed after police found the suspect’s .22 rifle and ammunition. Traut says ballistic tests are conducted on all confiscated firearms to determine if they can be linked to other crimes.
Meanwhile, members of the Cape Town Highlanders were deployed on Tuesday, July 20, to Nyanga, Khayelitsha and Samora Machel in support of the SAPS.
