Social grant beneficiaries can prepare for the festive season with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) confirming that December payments will return to the regular monthly schedule after November’s once-off adjustment for the Local Government Elections.
In a media statement dated last month on 28 October, SASSA confirmed that the payment dates from December 2026 through to March 2027 will remain as originally announced.
The agency also reminded beneficiaries that anyone whose grant is under review must respond to official notices to avoid the risk of payment suspension.
The December payment cycle will begin on Wednesday, 2 December, with older persons’ grants. Disability grants will follow the next day, while children’s grants are scheduled for Friday, 4 December.
The confirmed schedule is:
| Grant category | Payment date |
|---|---|
| Older Persons and War Veterans Grants | Wednesday, 2 December 2026 |
| Disability Grants | Thursday, 3 December 2026 |
| Children’s Grants | Friday, 4 December 2026 |
The children’s grant payment day includes the Child Support, Foster Child and Care Dependency Grants, while Grant-in-Aid is paid alongside the qualifying grant.
SASSA said the November changes were introduced following consultations with relevant stakeholders to accommodate operational requirements linked to the elections.
Under that temporary arrangement, older persons’ grants were paid on 30 October, disability grants on 2 November and children’s grants on 3 November.
The agency stressed that the adjustment applied only to November and should not be interpreted as a permanent change to its payment calendar.
The December payment cycle will use the grant amounts introduced in April 2026 following the Budget Speech.
The current monthly amounts are:
- Older Persons Grant: R2 400
- Disability Grant: R2 400
- Care Dependency Grant: R2 400
- War Veterans Grant: R2 420
- Foster Child Grant: R1 290
- Child Support Grant: R580
- Grant-in-Aid: R580
The Department of Social Development’s published 2026/27 payment schedule also confirms the December dates and the January 2027 payment cycle.
With December’s payments scheduled for the beginning of the month, beneficiaries will need to plan for the longer interval before the next standard grant cycle.
January payments are scheduled as follows:
- Older Persons and War Veterans Grants: Tuesday, 5 January 2027
- Disability Grants: Wednesday, 6 January 2027
- Children’s Grants: Thursday, 7 January 2027
SASSA advises beneficiaries who experience delays or difficulties accessing their payments to visit their nearest local SASSA office for assistance.
Alongside the payment confirmation, the agency has reiterated its warning to beneficiaries who receive notifications asking them to undergo a grant review.
SASSA says reviews form part of its efforts to ensure that social assistance reaches people who continue to meet the eligibility requirements and to prevent irregular or fraudulent payments.
Beneficiaries are expected to provide the requested information and supporting documents within the specified period. Failure to respond to a review notice may result in the suspension of grant payments, in accordance with the applicable legislation and procedures.
Importantly, beneficiaries are encouraged to check their grant status rather than wait for an SMS or another notification from the agency.
SASSA has provided a WhatsApp service through which recipients can check whether their grants are under review. Beneficiaries can send a simple ‘Hi’ message to 082 601 0111.
The service also provides access to eLife Certification and social grant application services, allowing recipients to obtain information without necessarily visiting a SASSA office.
The agency has also reminded beneficiaries that they are responsible for notifying SASSA when their circumstances change.
This includes updates to marital status, financial circumstances, residential address and cellphone numbers.
Keeping these details current is particularly important for people undergoing reviews, as outdated contact information could prevent them from receiving requests for documents or other important notices.

Cape {town} Etc previously covered SASSA’s temporary November payment changes ahead of the elections, including the separate payment arrangements for beneficiaries whose grants were under review.
The latest statement now confirms that the November adjustment does not carry over into the December schedule.
As the festive season approaches, beneficiaries are encouraged to use SASSA’s official communication channels when checking payment information and responding to review requests.
The agency has cautioned against relying on unverified messages or speculation about changes to payment dates.
For December, the confirmed payment cycle remains 2 to 4 December 2026.
