Amahle Hlam disappeared from her home in Old Crossroads on Human Rights Day. Her brother, 30-year-old Wesley Hlam, says his sister was excited about the public holiday because she wanted to rest.
‘She just woke up and left before we were awake, and we’re not sure what she was wearing. We checked her closet and we assumed she was wearing blue jeans, a white top, and green Crocs because [they were] not there,’ he told News24.
He adds that she would not go anywhere without informing anyone.
‘Amahle disappeared, and we haven’t heard from her since. The whole family is devastated because we don’t know where to look. The whole family has been affected, including the kids.’
‘She loved to play with them and now they are sad that she is nowhere to be found.’
Hlam is currently a Grade 12 learner at Immaculata Secondary School in Wynberg. Dumisani Qwebe, Nyanga’s community policing forum’s secretary, says police must make use of sniffer dogs and helicopters and track the cell phone as soon as the child is reported missing.
‘You can imagine losing a child on the day everyone is celebrating being free and having a right to life and liberty.’
