Warren Rhoode, the son of Major General Wally Rhoode, who heads President Cyril Ramaphosa’s security detail, was last seen on 23 April driving a black Polo Vivo in Eindhoven, Delft.
Wally Rhoode confirmed to News24 that his son’s body was discovered in Goodwood, Cape Town, but did not provide any further details. According to sources, Warren was killed in a hijacking.
The Rhoode family was informed and identified their son’s body at Tygerberg Mortuary on Saturday, 6 May 2023.
Although it is unclear if Warren’s disappearance was linked to his father’s work, sources last week declined to speculate.
Major General Rhoode previously made headlines for his involvement in the Phala-Phala scandal, which implicated a number of senior South African Police Service members.
Before Warren Rhoode’s body was found, his family had launched their own search, according to his aunt, Anthula Messeur, in an interview with News24.
Messeur expressed the family’s difficulty in coping with the situation and said that they had been praying for Warren’s safe return.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe told News24 that national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola had prioritised the investigation of Warren’s disappearance.
Mathe said that a case of murder had been registered and that Western Cape detectives were working to investigate and apprehend those responsible for the crime.
