Six people were gunned down in less than 24 hours over the past weekend in Heinz Park.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Andrè Traut, says the triple murders occurred on Saturday, 7 September and Sunday, 8 September. On Saturday, three men, aged 19, 37 and 51, were shot and killed on Cornflower Street after 7pm.

Detectives linked to the Serious Violent Crime Unit have detained two suspects, ages 29 and 30. Once charged, the pair will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court.

On Sunday, four armed suspects opened fire at a group of people on Roos Street at around 3:30pm. Two men, aged 34 and 41, and a 17-year-old boy were killed. According to News24, the suspects are still at large.

‘The motives for the two triple murders a day apart in the same area are yet to be determined, and the possibility that the two incidents are linked is not excluded.’

The Anti-Gang Unit is requesting that anyone with information regarding Sunday’s attack assist police with the investigation and contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
