The Somerset Mall has been closed due to roof sheeting blown off by the strong winds currently ravaging the Western Cape.
Charlotte Powell, spokesperson for Disaster Risk Management (DRM), says the facility is being evacuated and a building inspector is on scene. DRM has been activated.

In a Facebook post, the centre’s management announced its decision to close the centre due to ‘the risks associated with the current severe high winds and weather we are experiencing in the area’. It further stated that the ‘safety of our shoppers and staff is our first priority, and with the level 9 warning issued by the South African Weather Services, we believe this is the best decision for all.’
Furthermore, DRM is responding to Morkels Cottage and the Donkerbos informal settlement in Somerset West, where gusts have ripped roofs off of several structures.
Several people have been injured and emergency medical services are on the scene.
According to Ward 54 Councillor Nicola Jowell, several reports of roofs blown off in Somerset West, Macassar, Mitchells Plain and Clifton have been reported.
Meanwhile, the City’s Recreation and Parks Department is clearing uprooted trees in Somerset West, Macassar, Sea Point and Philippi.
Jowell has warned residents to ensure that outside furniture is taken indoors or secured as many items, including solar panels, roof sheeting and scaffolding are flying around. She warns that the wind is not currently at its predicted strongest and that rain is still on the way.
