Cape Town figure skater Gian-Quen Isaacs has made South African sporting history after winning gold at the Diamond Spin 2026 competition in Katowice, Poland, becoming the first South African female figure skater to claim the title, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The 21-year-old secured victory with an overall score of 152.73, finishing ahead of Switzerland’s Sayra Bessire on 151.78 and Poland’s Karolina Bialas on 151.40.
A comeback built on confidence
Isaacs’ victory followed a challenging Olympic qualifying campaign in Beijing in September 2025, according to Sport South Africa, where she finished 15th after facing uncertainty surrounding her selection. Although she did not secure an Olympic quota place at the event, the experience helped reshape her approach to competition.

The skater, who represents the Western Province Figure Skating Club, trains between Cape Town and Bergamo, Italy, under coaches Megan Allely-Painczyk and Ondřej Hotárek.
Her latest triumph came after she placed sixth following the short programme at Diamond Spin. She responded with a strong free skate to climb the standings and secure the gold medal.
Isaacs credited a mindset centred on ‘performance over pressure’ for helping her remain focused on her skating rather than the scoreboard.
She also described the achievement as an opportunity to represent South Africa and inspire young athletes interested in winter sports.
For Isaacs, the victory carries the spirit of Ubuntu, recognising the support and sacrifices of the people who have helped her along the way.
With the Senior World Championships and a future Winter Olympics among her ambitions, the Diamond Spin title marks a significant milestone in the Cape Town athlete’s international career.
