Rassie Erasmus is giving six rising South African rugby talents the chance to push for their first Springbok Test caps as the world champions prepare for a demanding November tour of Europe, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The Springbok coach named a 37-man squad on Wednesday, with Yaqeen Ahmed, Sebastian de Klerk, Luan Giliomee, Markus Muller, Riley Norton and Emmanuel Tshituka earning their first call-ups for the final stretch of the inaugural Nations Championship.
Their inclusion comes as South Africa prepare to face Italy, France and Ireland in three tests that could prove decisive in the race to secure a place at the competition’s Finals Weekend in London.
But the selection news also comes with a significant setback: Cheslin Kolbe, Eben Etzebeth, Andre Esterhuizen and Handre Pollard have all been ruled out through injury.
Six new faces get their chance in green and gold
While none of the six newcomers is a complete stranger to the national set-up, earning a place in the senior Springbok squad represents a major step in their careers.
Ahmed, Giliomee, Muller and Tshituka have represented the South African ‘A’ side against Zimbabwe. Norton, a former Junior Springbok captain, featured against the Barbarians earlier this season, while De Klerk attended a national alignment camp last year.
There is also a strong junior rugby pedigree among the selections. Ahmed, Giliomee and Norton were part of Junior Springbok squads that won the World Rugby U20 Championship, while Giliomee has also represented the Blitzboks.
Erasmus said the six players had been monitored for some time and had earned their opportunities through consistent performances at franchise level.
The coach has made squad depth a priority, and the November tour offers an opportunity to assess whether these promising players can make the step up against some of the strongest international teams.
Four established Springboks ruled out
The absence of four experienced players leaves Erasmus with important decisions to make as he prepares for the European leg of the competition.
Kolbe’s attacking ability, Etzebeth’s physical presence, Esterhuizen’s power in midfield and Pollard’s experience at flyhalf are all valuable assets. Their injuries create opportunities for other squad members to make an impression.
Erasmus acknowledged the disappointment of losing players of that calibre but said he was confident in the cover available within the group.
The squad still includes a substantial core of established Springboks, with captain Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Damian de Allende among those selected. The team will look to build on a season that has already brought victories over England, Scotland and Wales, followed by success against New Zealand in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.
Springboks face a demanding November schedule
South Africa currently sit level with New Zealand on 15 points in the Southern Hemisphere standings, leading on points difference. The upcoming fixtures will determine how they finish the league stage before the competition’s concluding weekend.
The Springboks’ November schedule is:
- 7 November: Italy vs South Africa
- 13 November: France vs South Africa
- 21 November: Ireland vs South Africa
- 27–29 November: Nations Championship Finals Weekend in London
Erasmus has warned against underestimating Italy, despite their lower world ranking, pointing to the challenge of playing in front of a passionate home crowd.
France will bring their usual physicality and attacking threat, while Ireland will provide another difficult test. The Irish have won four of the previous six meetings between the sides, although South Africa won their most recent encounter in Dublin.
With points crucial to the final standings, the Springboks will need to maintain their consistency across all three matches.
The November tour is about more than the immediate results. For the six uncapped players, it is a chance to show that their franchise and junior-level performances can translate to the highest level of the game.
Erasmus has made it clear that the demands of Test rugby are different, but he believes the newcomers have shown enough to deserve the opportunity.
The Springboks will assemble in Italy in separate groups on Sunday and Monday before beginning preparations for the opening match.
With key players sidelined and a tough run of fixtures ahead, the coming weeks could prove important both for South Africa’s Nations Championship ambitions and for the next generation of Springbok talent.
