A 32-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court today in connection with the murder of a Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) training officer who was gunned down during a meeting at the organisation’s office in Wynberg.

In May, 53-year-old Charmaine Bailey sustained a gunshot wound to her body during a meeting before suspects fled the scene. She was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel.
Shortly after the incident, Nkululeko Sityebi, a CATA spokesperson, said the purpose of the meeting was to discuss internal operations with taxi bosses. ‘Someone in the meeting stood up and shot her in broad daylight,’ he said. ‘We cannot speculate on the motive of this incident but we are having an urgent meeting to discuss this.’

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) urged the police to arrest those responsible for her death. ‘As Santaco, we have learnt with shock and sadness of the killing of Ms Charmaine Bailey. She was the training officer for Cata Regional Taxi Council, and a secretary at her primary association.’
Meanwhile, on Sunday, SAPS confirmed that one suspect had been arrested and would be appearing in court.
‘A 32-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s court on Monday, 3 July, in connection with the murder of Charmaine Bailey.’ said SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa. ‘Bailey who was in the taxi industry was shot and killed in Wynberg.’
‘The suspect was apprehended on Saturday in Houtbay during a police tracing operation and has been charged with murder.’
