The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) has expressed bewilderment following an incident in which a taxi driver was shot and killed after being involved in a vehicle collision on Tuesday.
News24 reports that the incident occurred after two taxis, one operated by a Codeta taxi driver and the other by a driver from Bloekombos-Wallacedene Taxi Association (Bloewata), collided in the vicinity of Site B, Khayelitsha. Following the collision, an armed assailant emerged from the shacks along Bonga Drive and allegedly targeted one of the drivers, while the other was able to escape unharmed.
The motive behind the killing is currently under investigation.

Nceba Enge, the secretary-general of Codeta, expressed the association’s confusion, stating, ‘The details are very sketchy, but we were informed that there was an accident between two taxis. While the driver was waiting for the owner of the vehicle, a suspect emerged from the shacks along Bonga Drive.’
The armed assailant allegedly targeted one of the drivers, while the other escaped unharmed. The deceased driver is reportedly from Bloewata in Kraaifontein, while the other belongs to Codeta.
Enge further disclosed, ‘We are waiting for more information from the other association, but they have not come forward to Codeta.’
He assured the public that there were no signs of tension or conflict between the two taxi associations.
He emphasised, ‘We would like to state that there is no taxi war, even though we have no details about the incident. We don’t want people to think this was taxi-related violence; this was an isolated incident. We ask everyone to stay calm as the police investigate the case.’
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg reported that no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
He provided insight into the investigation, stating, ‘The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Tuesday at about 11.10 am in Bonga Drive, Site B, Khayelitsha, where a 30-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded, are under investigation. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. A murder case was registered for investigation.’
