Residents of Tokai should prepare for temporary roadworks set to kick off this Sunday, 17 September, with an expected completion date in early November, weather permitting.
The City of Cape Town’s Road Infrastructure Management Department is embarking on a road resurfacing project that aims to enhance road quality and safety.
The work is scheduled to occur from Monday to Friday between 9am and 3:30pm, with night work taking place between 8pm and 5am. This scheduling minimises disruption during peak traffic hours.
Here’s a breakdown of the roads slated for resurfacing:
- Steenberg Road from Reddam Circle to Tokai Road
- Orpen Road from Tokai Road to Spaanschemat River Road
- Firgrove Way from Spaanschemat River Road to Ladies Mile Road
The project encompasses various tasks, including trimming overhead tree branches, relaying kerbs and channels, trimming side drains (Firgrove Way only), resurfacing the road with asphalt and reinstating road markings.

Asphalt resurfacing on Steenberg Road, Orpen Road and the section of Firgrove Way between Spaanschemat River Road and the Cape Academy will occur at night. The remainder of Firgrove Way will be resurfaced during the day, with efforts to align this work with public school holidays.
While these roadworks are essential for maintaining Cape Town’s extensive road network, residents and businesses should anticipate noise pollution during the construction period.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, encourages patience and caution among road users during this period. Temporary traffic controls will be in place to accommodate traffic in half-widths under Stop/Go systems.
