Ten people have been confirmed dead, and a further 30 were injured, after a bus crashed near Beaufort West in the Karoo. The crash occurred on the R61 in the early hours of Thursday morning, approximately 50 kilometres outside of Beaufort West.

Kenny Africa, Western Cape Traffic Chief, said that the death toll may rise as there are still more passengers trapped beneath the wreckage.

The bus was travelling from Cape Town to Beaufort West when it crashed. Africa says it seems that the driver lost control.

The wreckage is on the side of the road, and a stop-and-go system has been put in place at he scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
