The City of Cape Town has issued a warning to beachgoers, stating that criminals are increasingly targeting beaches.
The warning comes after officers recovered a stolen vehicle just minutes after it was stolen. The owner was enjoying a day at Strand Beach when his van passed by while he was still holding the keys. His quick reaction, combined with the officer’s hasty pursuit, resulted in the recovery and arrest of the two thieves.

The suspects jumped out of the van and attempted to flee after seeing the blue lights, but were apprehended and taken to Strand police station, where they were charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, said they noticed a growing trend as more people visited the City’s beaches.
“The hot weather the past few days did not deter criminals, who also made use of the opportunity to take their crime to the beach. The officers have to be commended for their quick reaction, but at the same time, I want to encourage residents and bathers to be vigilant at all times,” Smith said.
Smith stated that the two suspected thieves arrested were among 310 arrested in the previous week.
He advised residents to always be aware of their surroundings and to remain vigilant.
