The City of Cape Town has announced essential maintenance work on water supply systems in various areas, which will lead to disruptions in water supply.

Residents are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly, such as storing enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance and keeping taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage when the supply is restored.
Zero-pressure tests (ZPT) and conditional assessments will be done on the water supply network in the following areas:
Tuesday, 13 February 2024 from 9am until 4pm:
- Cherrywood Gardens
- Roundhay
- Lionviham
- Kalamunda and Audas Estate in Bizweni (Somerset West)
Wednesday, 14 February 2024 from 9am until 4pm:
- Somerset Ridge
- Westridge and Audas Estate in Bizweni (Somerset West)
Thursday, 15 February 2024 from 9am until 4pm:
- Polkadraai (Blackheath)
- Claremont
Friday, 23 February 2024 from 10am until 4pm: Westlake Industrial area.
Pressure management installations and operations
Zero-pressure testing and step-testing will form part of the installation process for pressure management technology. Tests will be done in advance to identify any unexpected inflows before installing smart pressure-reducing valves.
Some residents may experience low water pressure while others might not have any water for some time during the overnight testing period.

Conditional testing ensures that pressure-reducing valves (PRVs) in the water supply network effectively manage pressures at set levels, preserving pipeline lifespan and reducing water wastage from pipe bursts. The City advises that while some pressure fluctuations may occur, efforts are made to minimise them.
Furthermore, maintenance work such as pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements will result in water supply disruption in these areas:
Brackenfell (Tuesday, 13 February)
The maintenance team will replace a 400mm-diametre meter insert on the Brackenfell pipeline from 10am to 3pm on Tuesday, 13 February. The reservoirs that supply this area will be filled in advance to minimise the impact on residents.
Thornton and Grand West (Wednesday, 14 February and Thursday, 15 February)
The maintenance team will conduct repairs to the scour valve and replace a meter insert on the 535mm-diametre pipeline in Thornton from 10am on Wednesday, 14 February overnight until 4am on Thursday, 15 February.
The area’s water supply will be shut off during this period and residents are advised to store sufficient water for domestic use. Water tankers will be available to supply water where required.
