This comes after three bodies were found in the township after a shooting on Saturday night. A fourth person was wounded in the same incident.
Officers found the bodies of two men with gunshot wounds next to a taxi, while the third victim was discovered inside the vehicle.
“Detectives assigned to the provincial task team are probing the circumstances that left three males with fatal injuries and an innocent bystander with a gunshot wound following an incident last night in Khayelitsha,” said police spokesperson Andre Traut.
“According to reports, four gunmen opened fire at the victims in what we believe is related to the taxi industry. The bystander who sustained a gunshot wound was admitted to hospital.”
Meanwhile, Mitchells Plain police officers were on patrol when they conducted an impromptu search at a property in Mitchells Plain’s 6th Avenue, Eastridge.
“Upon arrival they searched the occupants inside the dwelling and confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition,” said SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi. “They arrested and detained a man on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”
In an unrelated intervention, police members of the Maitland Flying Squad responded to a complaint of a hijacked motor vehicle and drove to the given location.
“As the patrol vehicle entered Torbay Road, they saw the vehicle and stopped to investigate,” Swartbooi added. “Whilst they were busy on the scene, the driver of a blue Honda Ballade who just stopped, tried to drive away when he saw the police officers but was apprehended and forced to stop his vehicle.”
“They searched the occupants and the vehicle and confiscated a black 9mm pistol with ammunition.”
Five suspects, between the ages of 26 and 44, were arrested and detained on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
“Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Mitchells Plain and Wynberg Magistrate Courts.”
