At the time, two off-duty Air Mercy Service (AMS) paramedics were hiking up Lions Head when they encountered the tourist in distress upon reaching the summit.
After assessing the fellow hiker, the paramedics contacted the Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS control room to activate EMS for further assistance.
Due to the distance and extreme heat conditions, it would not have been possible to carry the hiker down the mountain, reported AMS.
The off-duty paramedics secured the landing zone on the scene, and a Western Cape Department of Health EMS/AMS rescue helicopter was activated.
‘The tourist was trooped into the helicopter and airlifted to Vincent Palotti Hospital for further medical assistance,’ said AMS.
‘We thank our paramedics for their swift actions and dedication to changing lives and saving lives. We wish the patient a speedy recovery,’ added AMS.
