The Western Cape Education Department has confirmed the deaths of five schoolchildren in a traffic accident on AZ Berman Drive in Mitchells Plain this morning, 30 May 2023.
According to the City of Cape Town, a light delivery vehicle, a minibus taxi and a Golden Arrow Bus collided near Beacon Valley at the intersection of AZ Berman Drive and Kerrem Street.
Arrive Alive reports that medics discovered the victims, aged 13 to 16, scattered a short distance away from the vehicle they had been travelling in. Medics assessed the children and discovered that five of them had already passed away as a result of their numerous injuries, while a sixth was critically injured.
Paramedics reportedly treated the critical patient and performed numerous advanced life support interventions on him before transporting him to a nearby hospital for urgent care.
Kevin Jacobs, a spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Traffic Services, has stated that traffic authorities are present at the scene to conduct further investigations.
According to a statement issued by Councillor Elton Jansen, the children attended the following schools:
Wespoort Primary
Lentegeur High
Duneside Primary
Highlands Primary
Harvester Primary
Ridgeville Primary
